SERVICES RESOURCES

Assistive Technology Project
Assistive Technology (AT) services are designed to maintain, increase or improve the function of people with developmental disabilities in the areas of communication, mobility, environmental control, cognition, employment or volunteer work, leisure and daily life activities.

When is it appropriate to use Assistive Technology?

AT supports are designed for use in all settings throughout the day. People with developmental disabilities should have access to supports and devices that allow them to participate in activities both communicatively and physically.

Integrating Assistive Technology Supports

AT services should be provided in a manner that integrates AT devices into an individual's life for ease of use and maximal function.  AT that is needed for functional participation in life activities should not be reserved for therapy sessions or used only as a reinforcement for "good" behavior. It should remain available for use in functional contexts and not stored away from the contexts of use.  Technical assistance may be obtained from the Therapy Services Unit/Clinical Services Bureau to support the integration of AT devices into the lives of individuals.

Other Important Information

All providers/ caregivers are responsible for maintenance, availability and proper use of all AT devices in all settings.  Some clients may need AT support services and devices from one or more therapies.  A Checklist for Referral for Assistive Technology/Therapy Services may be helpful when considering if specific therapy services are needed or may be beneficial to an individual's functioning (see checklist available in pdf).  More complete information can also be found in the "Guidelines For the Provision of Assistive Technology Services to Individuals with Developmental Disabilities Utilizing the Participatory Approach" which is available in pdf.

Technical Assistance

Therapy Consultants are available to provide technical assistance and information to therapists and teams throughout the state regarding AT, aspiration, therapy services available under the DD Waiver and related issues. For referrals, contact the Clinical Services Bureau - Therapy Services Team.
