2007 DDSD Statewide Awards
The Developmental Disabilities Supports Division (DDSD) honored the following people and agencies for demonstrating excellence in Meaningful Day services.  Awards were given in the areas of Best Employer and Employee, Individual Accomplishment, Professional Achievement, Provider Excellence, and Best Community Membership practices.

Maria Gamboa receives Honorable Mention for Community Employment, Employee Success of the Year.  Maria was recognized for moving from volunteering to the job in the community that she always wanted.

Maria Elena Gamboa is very social and loves being around others.  Since graduating from high school in 2006, she began volunteering at Peter Piper Pizza and at Johnny Carino's.  She enjoyed volunteering there, but she wanted something more challenging.  Elizabeth Chavez, Maria's step-mother and job coach, supported finding work for her at McDonalds.

Maria was able to get a position with McDonalds in February 2007.  From the very beginning, Maria knew working for McDonalds was the right place for her.

According to the McDonalds supervisor, Sam Gonzales, "She is an excellent worker." He notes that Maria enjoys every aspect of her job.

Maria values hard work and independence.  "I enjoy having my own privacy," Maria said, "and would like to increase my independence."  Maria eventually wants to attend college and buy her own mobile home.
