2008 DDSD Statewide Directors Meeting Information
The Developmental Disabilities Supports Division (DDSD) honored the following people and agencies for demonstrating excellence in Meaningful Day services.  Awards were given in the areas of Best Employer and Employee, Individual Accomplishment, Professional Achievement, Provider Excellence, and Best Community Membership practices.

Community Based Adult Habilitation Services, Community-Based Promising Practice

Disabilities Services, Inc. (DSI) in Gallup, New Mexico, is a long established leader in supporting individuals to connect with their communities in creative ways. DSI closed its sheltered workshop and segregated adult habilitation services more than ten years ago. The result is that many individuals live more meaningful lives and make valued contributions to their communities. What were once time-filling "activities" such as stringing beads have been replaced by individual jobs related to interests such as selling custom hat bands at the Flea Market, as well as creating jewelry and original artwork to sell at local galleries and other businesses and fairs throughout the Gallup and reservation communities.

All of the people who used to be served in segregated congregate settings are now employed at community jobs in restaurants, motels, day care, the City of Gallup and as free-lance artists. Not only that, individuals who were once isolated are now in the community dancing, dating, using public transportation, going to music events, drinking coffee with co-workers, hiking, fishing, shooting baskets, hitting the steam room, playing bingo, playing video games, going to sports events, playing pool, hanging out with friends and family and visiting grandchildren. DSI shows how to make this possible for creating and implementing community based promising practices.
