2006 DDSD Statewide Awards
The Developmental Disabilities Supports Division (DDSD) honored the following people and agencies for demonstrating excellence in Supported Employment and Meaningful Day services.  Awards were given in the categories of Best Employer, Individual Accomplishment, Professional Achievement, Provider Excellence, and Best Community Organization.

2006 ddsd statewide directors meeting award winners

The 2006 DDSD Statewide Directors Meeting Award for BEST COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION IN MEANINGFUL DAY is given to Pastor Jerry and Stella Chapman, of the Roswell Christian Center for demonstrating a warm and personal welcoming atmosphere with a commitment to cherishing each member's unique and personal gifts and personalities. The Roswell Christian Center is a small congregation that has embraced both Kathy Alderman and Fayerene Kiper (above).

The two ladies are warmly greeted with handshakes, pats on the back and are made to feel welcome as church members. During services, Kathy prefers to be on her feet and when the music starts, she is up at the front of the church dancing. The other members of the church appreciate Kathy’s enthusiasm and encourage her by offering her a tambourine to play during services. Fayerene occasionally bakes cookies or Rice Krispies squares for the youngsters in the children’s church.

The pastor’s wife, Stella Chapman, talked to the children about Fayerene’s communication method, which included the use of a Step-by-Step electronic communication device, and the children have grown accustomed to it. Now the children eagerly wait to hear what Fayerene has to say. Her device is programmed with conversational messages like, “Don’t forget to tell your mothers “Happy Mothers Day!” The children thank Fayerene for the baked treats and some share hugs with her.
