Project M Public Health Interns Valley Hoopz The Spot - Teen Dance SVMIP play Barber Shop Outreach Media Campaign

Barber Shop Outreach

A different approach to community outreach, involving barbers to reach out to young men and steer them toward healthier lifestyles and educate them about health services.  Many young men in the South Valley go to the barber weekly and will talk to them about everything.  The SVMIP organized a breakfast meeting, sponsored by a local restaurant, to talk to barbers about how they can incorporate some of the project’s goals into their everyday talks with young men.  Barbers were offered support, ranging from brochures, posters and educational rap CDs, to educational classes and demonstrations at their shops.  Eleven barbers were trained to talk to their clients about STDs and educational sessions were held at the barber shops while the clients are waiting to get their hair cut.
